HARSHADA GARUD reviews the buzz that day when as a 12-year-old, she nonchalantly approached a 50-kg rice sack, lifted it on her back and coolly put it down, cleaning off her palms, prepared for the following one. She was in Class 8, and had seen her dad battling to carry the sacks into their home in Wadgaon town.
“I didn’t appreciate it then, at that point,” she says. Six years on, Harshada has turned into the main Indian to win a weightlifting gold in the Junior World Championship.

Yet, it is additionally one of Maharashtra’s weightlifting centers, aside from Manmad, Sangli and Kolhapur, drove by 73-year-old wellness devotee Biharilal Dubey who set up fundamental exercise rooms here in 1972.
Harshada, truth be told, is named after Dubey’s little girl in-regulation with whom the high school star’s dad Sharad used to prepare. The dad recollects the celebratory parade while his preparation accomplice had won a crosscountry gold.
“I was exceptionally enlivened that day and concluded that my most memorable kid will be named after Harshada. That is the reason I was so blissful when my little girl was conceived. Furthermore, it was chosen even before her introduction to the world that she will be a weightlifter who will address India,” says Sharad, who works in the panchayat’s waterworks office.
“Fortunately, my little girl abhorred investigations, or she would have been up to speed in books. The day she lifted that 50-kg sack of rice, I drove her into weightlifting to finish my fantasy,” he says.Harshada grew up difficult, as per her loved ones. “There was an instructor who might tell her that she wouldn’t get the 35% expected to pass. However, Harshada got top notch, got some pedha, strolled into that educator’s class and said, ‘See, sir, I got five star. Absolutely never tell an understudy she can’t’,” her dad reviews.
“The instructor continued to challenge me, so I told him, ‘presently eat sweet and your words’,” says Harshada, who is affectionately called “Radio” since she “talks constant”.
“She’s so single minded she in all likelihood will not eat vegetables,” whines her mom, Rekha. “However, once at the instructional course in Patiala, she ate anything that the mentor asked her to. She’ll talk constant outside, however not a word while in preparing. She’s exceptionally aggressive and focussed.”
Dubey has been instructing in Wadgaon for a considerable length of time, and would demand that young ladies get prepared in games and weightlifting starting around 1980. The orientation fights separated — drivers heckling his crosscountry sprinters rehearsing in shorts on streets and his exercise center being insulted for welcoming young ladies — Wadgaon confronted one more sort of sports pretentiousness.
